STUDY OF THE RELATION BETWEEN H.PYLORI INFECTION AND GASTRO- ESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE (GERD)
Ghada Ahmed Maher;
Abstract
The pathophysiological role of Helicobacter pylori in the development of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcers is now widly accepted. However data on the association between H. pylori and gastroesophageal reflux disease are conflicting.
Some recent studies suggested a protective role of H. pylori against reflux esophagitis but some other studies found no consistent change in gastroesophageal acid reflux after H. pylori eradication.
The aim of our work is to study the relation between H. pylori infection and GERD and the effect of its eradication on the endoscopic and histopathological changes of the lower end of the esophagus.
Thirty patients were chosen among those attending the endoscopy unit of the Tropical Medicine Department, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University with endoscopic changes in the lower esophagus, all patients were subjected to full history and clinical examination. Upper endoscopy and biopsies were taken from pyloric antrum and lower end of the esophagus. Biopsies were examined histopathologically and stained with H&E and modified Gimsa stain for detection of H. pylori.
Patients proved to be H. pylori + ve received eradication regimen consisting of ranitidine bismuth
