WALID AHMED MOUSTAPHA;

Abstract

This study was conducted on 40 patients: 20 non-diabetics' and20 diabetics (non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus). The aim of the work was to study the impact of diabetes on the mortality and morbidity associated with coronary artery by pass graft (C.AB.G).

All patients were subjected to thorough history taking, clinical examination and routine preoperative investigations including full blood picture, liver and kidney functions, ECG, chest x-ray, preoperative echocardiography, cardiac catheterization . After the operation the patients were followed during their hospital stay for the development of complications or the occurrence of death. Postoperative investigations whether biochemical or radiographic were conducted

We found that there was a greater percentage of women among diabetics than non-diabetics. A greater proportion of diabetics were obese.
Diabetes was significantly associated with hypertension. A higher proportion had left ventricular dysfunction (determined both clinically and radiographically) .

The frequency of congestive heart failure was higher among diabetics as well as the frequency of 3 vessel disease and left main artery disease.
