GENETICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL STUDIES ON SOME VICIA FABA CULTIVARS WITH THEIR RELATION TO OROBANCHE CRENATA
Walid Mohammed EL-Rodeny;
Abstract
The present investigation was conducted under insect fi"ee isolation cage and in naturally heavily infested soil with Orobauche crena/a seeds at Sakha Agricultural Research Station (SARS), during the 1997/1998 season all the possible Fl cross combinations (without reciprocals) among the seven faba bean parents were conducted under the insect free cage by hand. Crossings were tried again during the 1998/1999 season also under the insect free cage. All the F1 crosses
(21) and their seven parental genotypes were evaluated under heavily infested soil with Orobanche crena/a seeds at insect free cage during the 1999/2000 season. All the experiment Lab. work was conducted in the Genetics Dept., Faculty of Agric., Kafr EI-Sheikh, Tanta University.
The characters under study were pertonned according to Griffing (1956). For the free
insect cage trial, means of each of the seven parent and their F 1 •s were subjected to analysis using
Model I, Methods II for Orobauche infested trial results. The most important results could be summarized as follows:
1- It may be noted that assessment oft he resistance could be based on the number of haustoria in connection with weight or volume of the tested plant roots. The data analysis showed that few haustoria were found on certain faba bean genotypes (X. 667, Giza 402, Giza 674, cross II and 14) with relatively small root system as compared to the highly susceptible cultivars (
1LB938 and Giza Blanca).
