Abstract
5. SUMMARY
Aphids are serious insects that attack several crops, from which are wheat, faba bean, cotton and.maize. The aphid infestation causes severe damage to plant hosts either directly by sucking plant juices or indirectly by transmitting virus diseases.
The current study was carried out in fields grown up with wheat, faba bean, cotton and maize located at the Experimental Farm of Faculty of Agriculture, Kafr El-Sheikh, Tanta University from 1998 to 2001. In addition, investigations were conducted at the laboratory of Economic Entomology Department, in the same Faculty.
The number of aphids and predators were directly counted in the wheat and fuba bean fields by taking weekly sample of 20 tillers and 20 shoots, respectively.
While cotton counted 20 seedlings was selected early in the season and 60 leaves later from each the lower, middle and upper parts of the plant. Also, weekly sample of I 0 plants were selected random from the maize plant in three square inches (one inch/leaf) and four shoots from 10 tassels.
The obtained results could be summarized as follows:
1. Seasonal abundance of aphids and their associated predators:
Four crops were considered through the course of the present study and they were: wheat, (Triticum vulgaris L.), fuba bean (Viciafabae L.), cotton (Gossypium spp..) and maize (Zea mays L.).
