RETROSPECTIVE AND PROSPECTIVE STUDY OF OESOPHAGEAL MALIGNANT DYSPHAGIA

Abstract


Our study including 21 cases with cancer oesophagus who were admitted in the department of surgery, sohag university hospital, south Valley University in the period from Oct., 1995 to Oct., 1999.


They were 16 males and 5 females. The age incidence ranged from 51 to 78years.
All patients of cancer oesophagus presented with dysphagia with or without other associated symptoms.


The diagnosis of oesophageal cancer based on the clinical presentation, endoscopic examination and biopsy if possible


Chronic lung disease with abnormal pulmonary function was the commonest pre -operative risk factor in-patients with cancer oesophagus.


Lower third carcinoma was the commonestsite (13/21) followed by the middle third. The commonest histopathological type was squamous cell carcinoma, which detected in 14 patients from 21.


Fourteen cases with inoperable disease at time of presentation were treated by palliative intubation. Seven cases presented with operable disease for whom oesophageal resection and reconstruction was done.

Death rate in our study was 6 cases from 21 within the mean period of follow up which is 24 month.
