REACTIVE GASTRITIS AND SPIRAL BACTERIAL INFECTION OF THE GASTRIC MUCOSA IN DIABETIC PATIENTS

Abstract

There is n o unequi vocal data on the occ urrence of Helico bacter py lori (Hp) and di fferen t ty pes of gastritis in diabetic pati e nts.

The a im of the stud y was to d efi n e the occ u rrence ofHp infection and reactive gastritis in diabeti cs.

Gstroscopy was performed on 50 pat i e nts w i th sy mptoms rel ated to upper a lim entary tract disord e rs (heart burn, upper a bdominal pain, nausea, vo mi ting and upper abdo min al congestion). 30 with di abetes mell itus, inc!uding l 0 w ith ins ulin - dependent di a betes me II it us (lDDM) a nd 20 with non-insulin-d epe nd e nt di abetes mellitus (N ID DM) and 20 patients w itho ut diabetes.

The presen ce of Hp and gast ri ti s was a n al ysed in 2 biopsi es first bi opsy for histopathol ogi ca l exa minati on a nd seco nd bi opsy for sel ect i ve culture for He I i cobacter pyl ori .

Hp infection was si gnificantly l ess frequent (P< 0,001) in d ia betics (30%, 9/30) th a n in n on diabet i cs (65%, 1 3/20).

The occurrence of chronic active gastntt s i n di a beti c pati en ts was (40°/o, 12/30), w h ereas amon g t h e controls it was (70%, 14/20) (P< 0.01 ).
