BACTERIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF A NEW METHOD TO ASSESS STREPTOCOCCUS MUTANS LEVEL IN SALIVA OF CHILDREN

Abstract


The aim of the present study was to evaluate the Dentocult SM Strip mutans as a new clinical method for detecting Streptococcus mutans levels in saliva.

The sample of this study consisted of sixty school children, their age ranged from 3-6 years. They were divided into three equal groups, group (A), having no carious teeth, group (B), having three carious teeth and group (C), having more than six carious teeth. All children had a complete set of primary dentition with no restorations and all were free from any systemic diseases.
Bacteriological investigations were done to measure the salivary level of Streptococcus mutans using two methods, the Dentocult SM Strip mutans and the conventional Mitis Salivarius Bacitracin Agar method.

The results revealed the following :


1. Streptococcus mutans was detected in the salivary samples of all children included in the shtdy. The Streptococcus mutans level differed according to the caries level of the child.
