BALLOOPULMONARY VALVULOPLASTV BELOW THE AGE OF ONE YEAR: HAEMODYNAMIC AND MORPHOLOGIC CONSEQUENCES

Mahmoud Mohammed Hasan Nafie;

Abstract

Previous work had suppmted the technique of balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty as the treatment of choice for patients with isolated valvular pulmonary stenosis.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety, as well as, acute and short- term consequences of the technique for a special age-group which are infants below the age of one year.

The study included 24 infants with moderate and severe valvular pulmonary stenosis. The mean age (at the time of valvuloplasty) was 5.28 ± 2.76 months. The
calculated body surface area ranged between 0.22 and
0.56m2 .

First, the diagnosis• was accomplished through detailed historical notes, physical examination, 12-leads electrocardiogram and chest X-ray.

second, the diagnosis was assured by echo-Doppler study and cardiac catheterization.

The procedure of balloon valvuloplasty was performed in all patients. The pressure gradients before the dilatation showed a mean of82.50 + 23.68 mmHg and
dropped immediately after the procedure to 15.J 6 mmHg
