EVALUATION OF SERUM CARNITINE LEVEL IN CHILDREN WITH ASTHMA

Faten Mahmoud khedr Mohammed;

Abstract

sthma is the most common chronic disease in pediatric age
groups and prevalence is forever increasing. It is chronic
inflammatory disorder characterised by episodic airway
obstruction due to hyper-responsiveness of the airways to various
endogenous and exogenous provocative stimuli reversed either by
treatment or spontaneously.
Acute asthma exacerbations cause considerable morbidity
and health cost utilization, as well as substantial mortality.
Asthma exacerbations are an indication of loss of asthma control
and should prompt re-evaluation of the child’s illness and the use
of controller therapy.
It was hypothesized that serum carnitine levels would be
reduced in acute asthma exacerbations.
The aim of the present study was to estimate serum total
carnitine levels in children with intermittent stable asthma and
acute exacerbations.
The study was conducted on 40 child diagnosed as
bronchial asthma (group 1), they were 21 males and 19
females, their age ranged from 3 to 9 years (mean±SD=
5.53±1.77), they were subdivided into two subgroups:
20 with acute asthmatic exacerbations (group1a).
20 were stable asthma (group1b).
