Novel Approaches For Ultrasound Guided Lower Limb Nerve Blocks

Peter Boles Armeya Ghattas;

Abstract

Ultrasound technology discovered by the French physicists called Pierre Curie, and his brother Jacques Curie added much to many fields of science and in diagnostic and therapeutic aspects in medicine and health sciences.
It made a noticeable advances in the field of regional nerve blocks in anesthesia: it makes it easier, safer with fewer complications specially faulty intravascular injections and increases the success rate of nerve blocks specially deep blocks as sciatic nerve block which has much less success rate with old blind techniques due to the fat in the gluteal region specially in obese patients.
The lower limb innervations depends mainly on lumbar plexus and sacral plexus of nerves, the lumbar plexus is formed by the ventral rami of the first three lumbar nerves and the greater part of the ventral ramus of the fourth nerve inside the psoas muscle. It gives the femoral nerve and many other branches.
The sacral plexus is formed by the anterior sacral roots from S1 to S3, and the lumbar roots from L5 are associated
