IMMUNOLOGICAL RESPONSE IN BENIGN AND MALIGNANT OVARIAN TUMORS

Remon Michael Fahmy;

Abstract

We have selected 52 cases with malignant epithelial ovarian tumor, confirmed by histopathology, and 21
cases with benign ovarian lesions from patients admitted to
Ain-Shams Maternity Hospital in the period from June 1999 to
Jan. 2001.

Intra-operative specimen were taken from the ovarian cases in all cases, fixed in 10% buffered formalin and processed for preparation of paraffin blocks. Routine histopathological examination was done for all specimens using haematoxyline & eosin stain to confirm malignancy and benignity and to determine the types and grades in the malignant group. Also, immunohistochemical study was done and we used two primary antibodies in this study. Anti Human CD8+ antibody, which used for detection of suppressor/cytotoxic T cells (CD8+ cells). The presence of CD8+ cells was shown as brownish staining of the cell membrane. Anti human CD68+ antibody For detection of macrophages (CD68+ cells) and the presence of them was shown as brownish cytoplasmic granular staining.
