SCOUR IN ABRUPT EXPANSION
YEIDA KAMAL ABDEL-MONIM;
Abstract
This study aims at investigating the relation between the parameters of the
scour hole that takes place downstream the abruptly expanded stilling basins with flow parameters, time, and expansion ratio.
In the theoretical study, dimensional analysis was applied to relate the different factors affecting the scour hole parameters. Experiments were conducted in a recirculating rectangular channel. Models used were of fixed solid length after which the chai,lllel bed is sandy. Models had •different expansion ratios, and were tested using variable flow parameters.
Statistical and regression methods were used to deduce empirical formulae for some sour characteristics. Relations were described using curves and were discussed using the different hydraulic principles.
It was concluded that the best expansion ratio to give minimum scour hole parameters is 0.5. Also, the scour parameters were found to increase with time and Froude number. The rate of increase decreases with time.
Finally, some practical applications were introduced to connect the study with field work.
