Refractory nocturnal reflux in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease

Abstract
This study was performed at the esophageal function laboratory, Graduate Hospital, Allegheny University, Philadelphia, PA, USA. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of esophageal motility abnormalities in patients with chronic GERD on PPI BID AC and to evaluate the role of esophageal motility abnormalities in the patients with refractory GER. In addition, the study aimed at evaluation of different treatment modalities in these patients.
In the first part of the study, we included a hundred consecutive patients (1997-1999) with chronic GERD on PPI BID AC for more than 1 month referred for evaluation or fo.llow up for GER symptoms. All the patients had undergone ambulatory pH study and esophageal manometry in addition to clinical evaluation. Their manometric and pH tracing were recorded and analyzed.
