Pituitary Gonadal Axis in Male Diabetics

Abstract


This study was carried out on 73 males subjects aged

35-60 years, (23) patients were Insulin dependent diabetes males (IDDM) , (40) patients were non - Insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM) and (10) healthy subjects were selected as control group. The study aimed to determine the changes that occur in testosterone and other pituitary hormones (FSH and LH) in both types of Diabetics and in its complications, other chemical measurements were performed namely prolactin, fasting and post - prandial blood sugar, lipid profile (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C and LHD-C ) and creatinine .
The results of the present study revealed the following :
I) significant increase in senun testosterone FSH and LH in (IDDM) complicated with retinopathy and significant decrease in prolactin in(NIDDM) patients with retinopathy
2) In neuropathic complicated patients, a decrease in semm testosterone and increase in FSH and LH were noticed in both types of diabetes .
3) Concerning the lipid profile. The study revealed
a significant increase in total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL-C in IDDM with decrease in serum HDL-C compared to the healthy control group .
4) The smokers in (NIDDM) group had high level 111
triglycerides and low levels in HDL-C . ·
5) No changes were observed in serum creatinine 111

diabetic patients in this present study.
