CLINICAL EVALUATION OF PIPECURONIUM BROMIDE (ARDUAN) IN PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM RENAL AND LIVER FUNCTION DISTURBANCES

THANAA SOBHI MOHAMED HODHOD;

Abstract

Pipecuronium is a non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent with prolonged duration of action which makes it suitable for use in moderate to long operations and intensive care unit. It can be used in patients undergoing cardiac surgery or cardiac patients undergoing non cardiac operations because it is devoid of adverse effects on the cardiovascular system.

The aim of this work was to study the duration of action and recovery from pipecuronium in normal patient in comparison with patient with liver or kidney impairment.

It was found that in patient with kidney dysfunction, there is a prolongation of duration of action and recovery from pipecuronium in comparison to normal patient. The increase in duration of action was in direct proportion to the degree of kidney impairment.

In patient with liver dysfunction, there is also a prolongation in the duration of action of pipecuronium in comparison to normal patient, but the duration of recovery is nearly the same.

So, patients with renal impairment showed more sensitivity to the drug as pipecuronium is predominantly excreted via the kidneys.
