Abstract

The condensation of benzaldehyde or 4-methoxybenz­ aldehyde with 3-benzoyl propionic acid,3-(4-methylbenz­ oyl) propionic acid, 3-(4-methoxybenzoyl) propionic acid or 3-(4-chlorobenzoyl) propionic acid, under Perkin conditions

gives the enol-lactones 5- phenyl -3- phenylmethylene-

2(3H)-furanone (1), 5-(4- methylphenyl)-3-phenylmethyl­ ene-2(3H)-furanone (2), 5- ( 4-methoxy-phenyl)-3-phenyl­ methylene-2(3H)-furanone (3), 5-(4-chloropheny1)-3-phen­ ylmethylene-2(3H)-furanone (4),5-phenyl-3-(4-methoxyph­ enylmethylene)-2(3H)-furanone (5), 5-(4-methylphenyl)-3-­ (4-methoxyphenylmethylene)-2(3H)-furanone (6), 5-(4-me­ thoxyphenyl)-3-(4-methoxyphenylmethylene)-2(3H)-furan­ one(7) and 5- (4-chlorophenyl)-3-(4-methoxyphenylmethyl­ ene) -2(3H)-furanone (8), respectively.
