Study the Prevalence of Diabetic Kidney Disease as a Cause for Starting Dialysis in Ain Shams University Hospital

Abstract


Our study aimed to identify the prevalence causes of starting dialysis in Ain Shams university hospital. Comparing change of etiology pattern over time.
It was a ten-year retrospective study from (2004 to 2013) conducted at Ain Shams University hospital by using medical records for patients who has CKD requiring regular dialysis in Ain Shams University hospital.
We excluded patients with acute renal failure and medical records with incomplete data that didn’t support diagnosis of CKD. Information obtained from medical records included demographic data and etiology of CKD.
The determination of the etiology of renal disease was based on history, laboratory investigations, ultrasonography, urinalysis, blood chemistry, serology and kidney biopsy.
In our study, the total number of patients was 3174 the sample consisted of 1569 (49.4%) males and 1605 (50.6%) females. The mean age was 53years.
1091 (34.4%) of ESRD patients had hypertension, 935 (29.5%) had diabetic nephropathy, 262 (8.3%) had obstructive uropathy, 102 (3.2%) had polycystic kidney, 90 (2.8%) had lupus nephritis, 45 (1.4%) had chronic GN, 45 (1.4%) had chronic pyelonephritis, 33 (1% )had analgesic nephropathy, 19 (0.6 % )had multiple myeloma, 20 (0.6%) had amyloidosis, (one) case had Alport syndrome at 2007and 531 (16.7 %) were of unknown etiology. 935 (29.5%) Patients had DN and 2239 (70.5%) patients had other disease.
