PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF TWO SYSTEM FOR WHEAT HARVESTING

ESSAM MOHAMED GHAZY;

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to compare two different systems of combine harvester. The first system was throw-in combine type but the other was hold-in combine type. The experiments were carried out at the research farm of Rice Mechani1.ation Center in Meet EL-Deeba- Kafr El Sheikh Governorate during harvesting wheat crop in the agricultural season of 1999. The comparison included the effect of combine type, forward speed, grain moisture content and reel or pick up unit speed on the following items:

5.1. Combine losses:

5.1.1. Header loss:

For all the grain moisture contents and two combine types, increasing both of combine forward and pick up unit speeds tends to increase the header loss. The reel or pick up unit speed had a highly effect on the header loss for all the other variables. Increasing pick up unit speed from
0.785 to 1.730 m/s tends to increase the header loss of about 4.37% for the hold-in combine type. The grain moisture content of about 18.43 % gave the minimum values of header loss compared with the other ranges for all the other variables. However, the average values of header loss were less with the throw-in combine type compared with the hold-in combine type. The header loss decreased by 28.24 % when the throw-in combine type is used instead of the hold-in combine type.

5.1.2. Threshing loss:

The threshing loss increased by 20.44% when the combine forward speed of the hold-in combine type increased from 1.51 to 2.92 km/h. Decreasing the grain moisture content from 21.90 to 13.15 %tends to increase the threshing loss by 52.68% for the throw-in combine type. On the other hand, the reel or pick up unit speed did not affect the threshing loss for all grain moisture contents, combine forward speeds and combine types. It is also clear that the hold-in combine type gave the lowest values of threshing loss compared with the throw-in combine type for a!! the other parameters. The threshing loss decreased by 6.79% at using the hold-in combine type instead of the throw-in combine type.
