Ibrahim Mohammed Elsayed Ahmed;

Abstract

Perioperative fluid management remains a highly questioned topic. There is wide variability of practice, both between individuals and institutions. Perioperative morbidity is linked to the amount of intravenous fluid given (fluid therapy) with both insufficient and, more commonly, excess fluid delivery leading to increased postoperative complications.
The aim of the study was to evaluate theeffect of excess fluid balance on the mortality and morbidity rate of surgical patients.
Our study was Prospective cohort study conducted in the ICU department in Ain Shams University Hospitals after approval by medical and ethical committee and obtaining informed consent, 75 patients of both gender (newly admitted to the ICU)were randomly assigned to enter this prospective study.
When the patient admitted to the ICU, The calculation of the fluid balance was coducted and monitored as regard organs dysfunction, hospital and ICU staye.
Our study demonstrates higher organ (especially neurological, respiratory and coagulation dysfunction)and length of the ICU stayin patients with excessive intraoperative fluid balance.
