Abstract

Since the outcome of early or prophylactic cervical cerclage is much better than cerclage placed after the cervix has dilated and membranes are bulging, it is important to diagnose incompetent cervix early.

As transvaginal sonography has some potential complications include increased risk of amnionitis, stimulation of contractions in preterm labor and induction of vaginal bleeding in cases with placenta previa; also the technique of might entail high ultrasound exposures and thus the possibility of unwanted biological effects, especially in early pregnancy; the objective of our study was to determine the correlation and agreement between transperineal (translabial) sonography and transvaginal (endovaginal) sonography in the assessment of cervical incompetence in early pregnancy

59 patients between 10 and 18 weeks' gestation underwent transperineal and transvaginal cervical assessment including cervical length, width, canal width and the diameter of the internal os measurements using a curvilinear probe and an endovaginal probe. In 4 patients a transperineal measurements could not be obtained because of poorvisualization of the required landmarks.
