"A STUDY OF THE RISK FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH HIGH PREVALENCE OF TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC HEPATITIS "C" VIRUS INFECTION IN ISMAILIA "A Case Control Study

Abstract

The association between chronic HCV and type 2 OM has been suggested by several authors.
Our study aimed at identifYing some of the possible risk factors and

pathogenic mechanisms responsible for this association.

The factors associated with the high prevalence of type 2 OM in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection can be divided into two groups:

l'' group: Includes the risk factors independent to HCV itself which are: family history of diabetes, and obesity particularly central obesity.

2"• group: Includes the major pathogenic mechanisms related to HCV appear to be due to insulin resistance, islet-cell antibodies and fatty Iiver.

Also we found that (HCV-type 2 diabetic) patients have worse diabetes control and more in need to insulin than type 2 diabetics who are seronegative for HCV.
