COMPLICATIONS OF MENINGIOMAS IN ELDERLY PATIENTS

MAGDIMO-llAMED YOUSSEF;

Abstract

Meningiomas represent 15-18% of intracranial tumours, but their incidence rises to J6. Jo/c, in patients over 65 years of age. Although a peak was observed in the past at 45 years of age, recent studies disclose a progressively higher mean age, as a result of the improved conditions of life, a consequent increase in the average life span and advances in non-invasive diagnostic methodologies.

An operational or empiric definition of the elderly is those who are 60 years or older. It is helpful to further subdivide the elderly into two subsets: those between the ages of 60 and 70 years old and those over 70 years old .

Although the surgical complications may be similar in both groups, medical problems, such as dee p vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, hypostatic pneumonia, cardiac arrhythmias, hypertension, atherosclerosis, ischaemic heart disease and diabetes mellitus tend to worsen the outcome in the latter group.
