The Stress Hormone Copeptin as a Prognostic Biomarker in Acute Illness

Abstract


ith this study we demonstrate the potential role of copeptin in the stratify the patients referring to the Emergency Department and results related to diagnostic potential of copeptin and that this biomarker is able to differentiate between the populations and stratify the disease severity as prognostic index, lower concentrations of copeptin on admission are related to lower mortality.
The present Study was conducted on eighty four subjects were of both gender and age ranging from 18-60 years old. Sixty four were patients who attending Ain shames university emergency room and admitted to ward sample collected within 48 hour from admition .They were with acute deterioration of their chronic illness, example of illnesses, which were included : seven patients had chronic liver diseases( most of them were Child C on Child-Pugh score), twenty patients had COPD (admitted with infective exacerbation) , fifteen patients had cerebrovascular stroke and twenty patients had heart failure and two patients had infective endocarditis . The patients followed up till their discharge, or transfer, or death. For patients who transferred to ICU, their progress was also monitored till their discharge or death. and twenty were healthy subjects as a control group .
