Evaluation of visual inspection with acetic acid compared to cervical cytology for detection of cervical intraepithelial lesions

Abstract


The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of visual inspection with acetic acid (V.I.A) in detection of cervical lesions compared with cervical cytology.
This study included 1000 women with age ranging from 20-65 years old presented at the outpatient clinics at Assiut General Hospital in Assiut governorate, Egypt from January to November 2009 and the cervico-vaginal smears were examined in the Early Cancer Detection Unit at Ain Shams Obstetric and Gynecology Hospital.
Exclusion was done to pregnant women, women with amputated cervix, total hysterectomy or with apparent cervical pathology, during menstruation, women using vaginal douches or sexual intercourse that had occurred in the preceding 3 days.
After history taking in a special data entry sheet general examination was done then inspection of cervix with the naked eye for detection of any visible lesions, polyps, discharge, erosions or HPV infection.
Cervico-vaginal smear was taken using Ayre's spatula which had been placed at the cervical os and rotated gently by 360 degree twice to obtain a sample and from posterior fornix using the other end of spatula then smear prepared by spreading the specimen uniformly across a glass slide which immediately fixed in 95% ethyl alcohol contained in a plastic or glass jar and transported to cytology laboratory in the Early Cancer Detection Unit at Ain Shams Obstetric and Gynecology Hospita
