Abstract
Conclusions:
The results of the present study demonstrated that:
1- Smoking was a significant risk .factor ofper_iodotltitis.-
2- Current smokers . had ·higher prevalence and - severity of periodontal disease than ex-smokers and 110p smokers.-

3- The effect of tobacco on periodontal tissues seems. to be mm;e-
pronounced in men than in .women.
4- The effects of smoking on periodontal tissues d.:!pend on the_
number 9f cigarettes smoked daily and the duration of the habit.
5- Gingival index, calculus for,mation, plaque index, gingival recession, pocket depth and clinical ·attachffiertt .. loss were significantly greater in current smoker than in ex-smokers and
non-smokers.

on dental health. Every effort should be done .to motivate quit.ting of smoking as results_ showed the reversible effects of tobacco
smoking on studied measures of dental health.
- Dentists awareness about tobacco smoking hazard's should be escalated through inclusion in their _under and post gradu te curricula information regarding to hazards they can play a role in· heai.th education of their clients to motivate quitting of smoking.
- There is- a need to improve the general dental hygiene and smokers
in particularly though practicing regular teeth brushing :md
