Abstract
Objective The aim ofthis work is to compare the diagnostic reliability of transvaginal sonography, hysterosonography and hysteroscopy in the evaluation of uterine cavity in cases of abnormal uterine bleeding.
Study design: The study was conducted on 30 women presented with abnormal uterine bleeding collected from outpatient clinics of Benha University hospitals. It was conducted during the period from January
1998 to March 1999. Routine transvaginal ultrasonography was used to
detect any uterine abnormality, followed immediately by hysterosonography. Hysteroscopic examination was done with endometrial tissue samples by curettage. The results of transvaginal sonography and hysterosonography were compared with that ·of hysteroscopic and histopathologic examination.
Results: It was found that transvaginal sonography had sensitivity of
63% for all findings detection with high false -ve and false +ve rate. There is significant difference in diagnosing endoluminal polyp of P=0.004 Transvaginal hysterosonography has complete agreement with the hysteroscope in detecting submucous myomas and endoluminal polyps with sensitivity and specificity of I 00%, but had the least agreement for endometrial hyperplasia with sensitivity of I 00% and
specificity of 67%.
Conclusion: Transvaginal hysterosonography is a reliable office procedure for evaluating '.vomen with abnormal uterine bleeding.
