PULMANARY ARTERY BANDING

TATAT AHMED REDA MAHMOUD;

Abstract

Based on our limited results we concluded that: Pulmonary artery banding is a useful palliative procedure in patients with congenital heart diseases with unrestricted pulmonary
blood flow. PAS is still beneficial in multiple, complicated, or

medically compromised VSD, as well as in very small neonates with atrioventricular septal defects, and DORV with high pulmonary blood flow not amenable to early complete repair. PAB in
functional single ventricle allows safer delayed definitive repair. Pulmonary artery banding was found to be not only effective in decreasing the pulmonary artery pressure but it also allows
regression of some types or forms of pulmonary vascular changes

that already happened.

The mortality in pulmonary artery banding is clearly associated more with the complex cardiac anatomy and the overall condition of the patient rather than with the procedure itself. Patients who are selected for pulmonary artery banding and staged repair are
often chosen because they are considered too ill to safely undergo definitive repair, thus selecting a higher risk group at the onset.
