PHARMACOKINETIC STUDIES OF CIPROFLOXACIN IN CHICKENS

GAMAL MOUSTAFA IBRAHIM;

Abstract

The present work was initiated to study the pharmacokinetic profile of ciprofloxacin in normal and experimentally Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) infected chickens
and its tissue residue.

Following single oral administration of 10 mg ciprofloxacin

/kg b.wt it was detected 24 hours post-oral dose with values equal to 0.084 ± 0.007 ug/ml and 0.15 ± 0.008 ug/ml in normal and infected birds respectively.

The pharmacokinetic aspects were studied in two groups of normal broiler chickens and two groups of Mycoplasma gallisepticum infected chickens; each group of 10 birds. The concentration of ciprofloxacin was determined by microbiological technique and the obtained results showed that following the intravenous injection of 10 mg/kg b.wt in normal chickens, ciprofloxacin was fitted to follow the two compartment open model. The distribution half-life (to.s(al )was 0.27 ± 0.01 hour in normal birds and the elimination half-life (to.s(Bl )was 4.09 ± 0.08 hours with mean total clearance (CI(totl) of 1.36 ± 0.07 ml/kg/min.
