IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL STUDY OF THE MUSCLE BIOPSY IN MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY
RIHAM MOHAMED MAHMOUD;
Abstract
The muscular dystrophies are a group of inherited neuromuscular diseases, the most important of which are Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD), limb-girdle. muscular dystrophy (LGMD), congenital muscular dystrophy (CMD) and severe childhood autosomal recessive muscular dystrophy (SCARMD). Clinical differentiation between these types is sometimes difficult especially between DMD and SCARMD that show the same clinical features.
Discovery of dystrophin and dystrophin-associated proteins helped much in the diagnosis of different types of dystrophies.
The aim of this work is to present and discuss our results concerning immunohistochemistery of dystrophin and a-sarcoglycan protein in a group of patients who were clinically suspected to have muscular dystrophy in order to clarify the value of immunohistochemistery in the differential diagnosis of muscular dystrophy.
