Abstract
Neonatal hyperbilirubinem i a is the most common cause of hospi tal i zation among fullter m newbo rns. I t occu rs i n 50% to 75% of newborn infants. Neonatal jaundice co ul d be on emergency and cou ld lead to com plication, is not treated in ti me. Significa n t hearing loss i s one of the m ost common major abnormalities present at bi rt h and, if not detected, wi ll imped e speech , l a nguage a nd cogniti ve development. It has been known for al1110<:t h a lf a century th at sensorineura l hearing l oss is a cli n ical consequence of kernicterus. Severe hyperbilirubi nemia, even without kern icterus is particularly toxic to the aud itory pathway and may result in sensorineural hearing loss. Thi s stud y was performed to determ i ne hearing defects among i n fants below the age of t wo yea rs who were exposed to neonatal hype rbiliru binem ia. The studied infants were t aken from both Suez Canal University Hospital and Damietta General Hospi ta l. The time of exami nation of these chil dren was from May to Dece mber 200 I . The ages of studied infants at the time of examination were from 6- 18 mont hs a nd the gestational ages were from 30 - 40 weeks. We excl ud ed infants wi th, congen ital malformation, congen i tal hydrocepha lus, fami l y histo ry of hearing impai rment, microcephaly or macrocephal y, post encephaliti c syndrome or proved intracrai ni al haemorrhage, infants with past history of neonatal compli cation such as, neonatal sepsis, meningitis or hypoxic ischaem i c enceph alopathy and those with obstructi ve jaundi ce. The study has been conducted on one hundred infants bel ow the age of two years di v i ded into three groups according to t hei r serum bil irubi n level, the first group was included twenty-five infants wit h serum bilir ubin l evel bet ween
