Effect of Acute Haemodynamic Changes Following Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty on Serial Electrocardiograms and Their Haemodynamic And Echocardiographic Correlations

Abstract

Serial electrocardiographic changes occur in mitral stenosis that talk of the natural history and different stages of the disease. Electrocardiogram in mitral stenosis does not only reflect chamber enlargement in different stages in the natural history, but also reflects the altered hemodynamics throughout the course of the disease.

Percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty has emerged as an effective alternative to surgery in selected patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis, the results of which are comparable to surgical commissurotomy. Acute hemodynamic changes follow the procedure and are expected to appear in the electrocardiogram.

The study aims at recording the electrocardiographic changes after the intervention (if any). Furthermore, to correlate these changes with the hemodynamic and echocardiographic post­ balloon situation. This may (or may not) give a clue to the evaluation of the extent of procedural success.
