Iman Ibrahim Ghanem. The Effectiveness ofMetacognitive Strategy Training for Developing EFL Students' Reading Comprehension. Master of Education, Tanta University, Faculty of Education, Department of Curriculum
& Instruction, 200I.

This study was intended to investigate the effectiveness of metacognitive strategy training on EFL students' reading comprehension. For this purpose, 62 second-year EFL students were randomly selected and assigned to an experimental group (N=32) and a control group (N=30). Both groups studied the same reading material developed by the researcher; only that the experimental .group was trained via the selected meta-cognitive strategies and ihe control group via cognitive strategies.
The program consisted of Four Units. Each unit consisted of four sessions focusing on a metacognitive strategy. In the first unit, students were trained to fill in and develop semantic maps (the semantic mapping strategy). In the second unit, they were taught to make connections between background knowledge(experience) and the reading text (the experience-text -relationship strategy). In the third unit, they were taught to make content predictions employing background knowledge and experience (the prediction strategy). In the fourth unit, they were taught to practice all the strategies on two passages.
Two formulas of the t-test were used to tackle the students' scores on the reading comprehension test: the t-test for independent samples to compare the performance between .groups and !-test for related samples to measure the improvement within the same group. The aim was to measure the differences on overall comprehension, literal comprehension and critical comprehension.
Results revealed no significant differences between groups and significant differences within groups. Thus, both cognitive and metacognitive strategies are recommended for EFL teaching situations (University Level). KeyWords:
Reading comprehension, metacognition, metacognitive strategies,

strategy training.
