The Economic Impacts of Commercializing Biotech Crops in Egypt

Abstract
Biotech crops are produced using genetic engineering, which is the highest stage of agricultural biotechnology. Biotechnology is defined in chapter one according to the FAO, ISAAA and the CBD (Convention on biological diversity) of the UNEP. Biotechnology can be defined as the science of using a living organism or derivatives for specific uses.
Biotech crops are genetically engineered to capture improved traits like insect resistance, herbal resistance, drought resistance and improved nutrients. The end results are improved quantity, quality, lower or no chemicals and lower cost of production.
Until 2013, biotech crops are commercialized by 27 countries, in addition to 36 countries have granted regulatory approvals for biotech crops, including EU which had a “de facto ban” during 1999-2004.
