Expression of Podocalyxin in Colorectal Carcinoma: An Immunohistochemical Study

Dina Saleh Abdulreda;

Abstract

This retrospective study was conducted on fifty colorectal carcinoma. Cases were collected randomly from colectomy specimens, during the period from 2009 till 2014. Sections were prepared from paraffin blocks and the slides were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and immunohistochemically stained with PODXL antibody.
Most of the studied cases of CRC were in patients older than 40 years representing 72% of all cases. The age of the patients ranged from 21 to 75 years with mean age 49.1±11.9 year. Female predominance representing (64%) of all cases.
The commonest location for CRC in the studied cases was in the left side (left hemicolon and rectum) representing 70% of all cases. Mean tumor size was 4.7 cm in its highest diameter.
The majority of cases 76% were classified histologically as conventional adenocarcinoma. According to the WHO grading criteria (2010), most of cases were moderately differentiated (66%).
The percentage of the studied CRC cases infiltrated into the subserosa or into non peritonalized pericoloic or perirectal tissue (T3) was 78%. CRC cases metastasized to lymph nodes representing 52% of all cases. 52% of CRC cases showed no evidence of distant metastasis (85%).
