ANGIOGENESIS

Dina Mohamed Sami Shaheen;

Abstract

Angiogenesis is the formation of new blood vessels as our growths from preexisting blood vessels. It is a normal aspect of embryonic development and response to wounding.

The phemomenon of angiogenesis has been familiar to morphologists and phsiologists since the late 19th• century. Angiogenesis became much more undersiood in 1935 to describe new• blood vessels in the placenta.

Angiogenesis occurs in normal physiological condition as in the female reproductive system and in wound healing.

•Much effort in the last twenty years has been devoted to the isolation, characterization and purification of factors that either stimulate or inhibit angiogenesis.

Angiogenesis plays an important role in the pathogenesis of tumours, metastasis and invasion thus many antiangiogenic factors are under clinical trials to suppress tumour growth and metastasis as IFN a -2A, AGM-1470, platelet factor 4 and others. These factors might mantain metastases at a microscopic dormant state which is know as "domancy state". It is possible to employ antiangiogenic therapy together with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
