Nura Naseb Mohmed;
Abstract
Mental retardation IS the most fi•equcntly occunng handicap in
'
'
children. It interferes with learning, social and psychological development.
This work was planned, therefore, to throw light on mental retardation in Libya, by studying the possible biochemical factors affecting the etiology of' this medical and social problem and to evaluate the dif'erent
risk 1;1ctms af'f'ccting mental retardation in Libvan childrern.This is the first
'
study tube done on those patients in Libya.
One hundred and si:-;ty seven Libyan mentally retarded children from both sexes were cng<:!lcd in this study in which the level of'serinn lipids pmf'ilc, serum sialic acid• and (serum and urine) amino acids were measured. They were grouped according to etiology of' mental retardation into: Dmvn•s syndn>tnc (Group 1), cerebral palsy (Group II) ,other causes r;Jtcr than US or Cl' (gmup Ill).
1.<) <1sscssn1cnt was done for all patients at time of' diagnosis with detailed personal and t;unify history. Fillty healthy children with normal U). were selected as controls.
The results obtnined revealed the following:
I. /!io/ogicu/ and n1kjitclors
a- The incidence of' mental retardation was higher in males than lc1nalcs.
