Abstract

Chronic kidney disease results in complex endocrine and metabolic alterations including thyroid dysfunction. There are many mechanisms explaining the link between thyroid and kidney disease, both of them affects each other, plus both consider as an independent factor for cardiovascular disease.
Impaired kidney function does not only have an effect on thyroid gland function but also alters thyroid structure. A higher prevalence of structural abnormalities in ESRD patients also there is higher prevalence in iodine retention and Iodine induced functional and structural disorders.
A high prevalence of thyroid autoimmunity and hypothyroidism, papillary thyroid carcinoma has been reported in patients with chronic HCV infection. In most chronic illness, defects arise in thyroid hormone metabolism, resulting in the sick euthyroid syndrome. It has been suggested that this syndrome may confer a survival advantage, which adapts an organism to chronic illness by reducing the basal metabolic rate within cells and thereby reducing caloric requirements,
