Abstract


Ninety five patients and fifteen healthj persons were included in the present study. They were classified into four groups: Group I (60 patients with hepatic coma complicating chronic liver disease). Group II (20 patients

with fulminant hepatic coma). Group Ill (15 patients with non-
encephalopathic chronic liver disease. Group IV ( 15 healthy persons as

control).

All patients and controls were subjected to thorough history taking and
complete clinical examination, completd urine and stool analysis, haematological examination, ESR, BSL, sodle kidney function tests, serum

electrolytes, some liver function tests, abdominal ultrasonography, culture of
blood, urine, sputum or ascitic fluid, viral markers for HAV, HBV, HCV,
HDV and HEV, measurements of arteriJl blood ammonia levels and
measurements of serum IgG, IgA and IgM.
