Abstract
Renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury develops following a sudden transient drop in blood flow to the kidney. Renal I/R injury is a relatively common cause of acute renal failure. The pathogenesis of renal I/R injury involves the release of reactive oxygen species. Also, nitric oxide plays an important role in mediating cell damage.
The effectiveness of alpha tocopherol compared to 17 beta estradiol as a protective agent against renal I/R injury is a challenging question as they act by two different pathways.
The present study was done as an attempt to clarify the possible protective role of alpha tocopherol and 17 beta estradiol separately, and in combination against renal I/R injury, using the male albino rat.
Fifty four adult healthy male albino rats weighing 220 - 250 g were used and divided into; control group (30 rats) that were subdivided into five subgroups (6 rats each) and the remaining 24 rats were divided into four experimental group (6 rats each).
Group I (control group): was divided into subgroup Ia (sham operated group): the rats underwent only laparotomy without occlusion of renal pedicle. Subgroup Ib: three rats received 0.5 ml saline S.C. and 3 rats received 7.5 ml 10%
