THE ROLE OF ULTRASOUND IN ACUTE ABDOMEN

Abstract


Acute abdominal conditions constitute the major part of all visits to the emergency department. Acute abdomen provides not only a large work load for the general surgeon, but also many diagnostic and management problems. Once a tentative diagnosis is established, an imaging procedure should be selected that will mostly quickly confirm or exclude the diagnosis.



The atm of this work 1s to evaluate the role of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of acute abdomen and its possible impact effect on the choice of the method of intervention in such patients.



This study included 41 2 patients admitted to Emergency departments of Damanhour Teaching Hospital and Menofiya University Hospital within a period of ' :J years. They were divided into the following groups :
Group 1: Included 1 23 traumatised patients.

Group II: Included 289 non traumatised patients, they were further subdivided into:
Subgroup /Ia : Included 1 38 patients suffering from acute upper abdominal pain.
Subgroup 1/b : Included 1 51 patients suffering from acute lower abdominal pain.
