Abstract

Aim:The present study aimed toinvestigate the antiproliferative effect of garlic oil during 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-induced rat buccal pouch carcinogenesis. Material and Methods:The ratsbuccal mucosa was painted with 0.5% DMBA in liquid paraffin three times a week. Simultaneously, they received garlic oil orally daily with a dose of 50mg/kg for 6 and 12 weeks.Tissues were examine histologically using H & E stain and immunohistochemically using keratin, pan and ki67 antibodies. Results:After 12 weeks, the antiproliferative effect of garlic oil was markedly observed in comparison with 6 weeks results. Image analysis results of ki67 immunostainting revealed an increased expression of ki67 in DMBA groups when compared with the control groups. Meanwhile a decreased expression was observed in the garlic oil treated groups when compared with the DMBA groups. Conclusion:The present study suggests that garlic oil might have partially inhibitedthe hyperplasia during DMBA-induced rat buccal mucosal carcinogenesis.
