Study of Unmet for Family Planning In Upper Egypt

Abstract


The •concept of family planning includes not only spacing between pregnancies or limiting the number of children for demographic or couple reasons but also the great positive sequelae on both women's and child's health. Unmet needs for contraception includes married women who are sexually active, not using a contraceptive method, yet do not wish to have any more children or want to postpone pregnancy for a certain period.. If also includes pregnant women with unwanted or mis-timed pregnancy if no contraception was used.
The present study aimed at studying reasons behind non-use of contraceptives among women who are in need of family planning and wish to
. postpone pregnancy or limit the number of their children and to study different levels of family planning service delivery which might underline the study problem.
The present study was conducted in both Assiut and Sohag governorates both in the form of visits to homes of participant women and clinics providing family planning service.
The first part of the study included 116 women who fulfilled the criteria of
"unmet need" in addition to 137 age and residence-matched women who fulfilled the "met need" category. Both groups of women were interviewed using a set of questionnaires. Moreover, two focus group discussions were held for users and non-users of family planning with their husbands.
The second part of the study included 400 family planning clients who
were interviewed using a set of different questionnaires as well as 16 physicians and 21 nurses/social workers working in 8 clinics in both study governorates. Moreover, two focus group discussions were held with family planning service providers at some of these clinics.
