The Outcome of Dual Mobility Cups For Total Hip Replacement In Patients at Risk of Dislocation

Haitham Emad El-din Hafez Sallam;

Abstract

Although total hip replacement (THR) remains one of the most successful procedures in modern orthopedic surgery, complications may occur. Dislocation is one of the major complications that may increase the hospital length of stay and even lead to a revision arthroplasty.
Instability after total hip replacement can occur in 2% to 7% in primary cases and can reach up to 25% to 30% in revision cases and and the majority of the dislocating events occur during the first three months after surgery.
The dual mobility concept was developed by Professor Gilles Bousquet in 1974. His goals were to limit the risk of post-operative prosthetic instability and to restore the postoperative range of motion (ROM) so that it matches the physiological ROM as closely as possible.
