Impact of Hemofiltration on Morbidity and Mortality in Critically Ill Patients

Osama Zein El-Abdien Elsayed Elmohr;

Abstract

Hemofiltration was developed to provide artificial kidney support to patients who could not tolerate traditional hemodialysis due to hemodynamic instability.
Hemofiltration also can be used in hemodynamically stable patients requiring middle or large solute clearance.
It is widely accepted that patients with uremic complications, severe hyperkalemia, severe acidosis and pulmonary edema should be dialyzed emergently even by Traditional intermittent hemodialysis or hemofiltration. Traditional intermittent hemodialysis often causes more hemodynamic instability, so it's better using hemofiltration.
Recently,hemofiltrationuse has increased dramaticallyand become the therapy of choice for critically ill patients not only for acute kidney injury but also with some of non-renal diseases.
Recent studies suggesting that using of hemofiltration improve patient general condition, lung function, cardiac function and clinical outcomes, i.e. decrease mortality, increase recovery of kidney function and reduce the need for dialysis support compared to standard intermittent hemodialysis.
Complications that can be occurred as a result of using hemofiltration can be prevented or treated if they occur.
