GESTATIONAL TROPHOBLASTIC DISEASE A HISTOPATHOLOGICAL AND ELECTRON MICROSCOPIC STUDY

OMNIA MOHAMED KAMEL RIZK;

Abstract

The present study was performed on 150 cases of GTD collected frm Department of Pathology, Tanta University as well as from pnvate labs, clini cs and hospitals of Gynecology & Obstetric
from January 1994 to December 1998.

Ti ssue were fixed in neutral buffered formalin (I0%) for 24 hours, then paraffin embedded sections (3-5J..l) were prepared for stud y. The sections were subjected to routine haematoxylin and eosin study.

For electron microscopic study, two cases were obtained as fresh specimens and fixed in (2.5%) glutaraldehyde solution.

The 150 cases were di vided as 133 cases of hydatidiform mole, 12 cases of invasive mole, 3 cases of choriocarcinoma and 2 cases of placental site trophobl astic tumor. The 133 cases of hydatidiform mole were further subdivided into 97 cases of complete hydatidiform mole and 36 cases of partial hydatidiform mole. -

Hydatidiform mole (HM):

As regards the mean age among cases of CHM was 35 years old while it was sli ghtl y l ower for cases of PHM (30 years) Enlarged u terine s i ze occurred in all cases of CHM whi l e in PHM the uterus was of normal size for gestational age in most of the cases (91.6%) and small for gestational age in few cases (8.3%). Abnormal uterine bleeding was the co mmonest presenting symptom among HM cases whether complete or partial representing 98% and 96% respectively.
