OCT ANALYSIS OF RETINAL WHITENING IN CENTRAL RETINAL VEIN OCCLUSION

Sara Mustafa Mohammed;

Abstract

Introduction:Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is a frequent primary vascular disorder of the retina with vein blockage in the optic nerve head.Two types Of CRVO; Ischemic and non ischemic.Two types of retinal white lesions can be seen in CRVO:a- Cotton wool spots.b- Patchy ischemic retinal whitening.Aim of the work: To detect the incidence and to describe OCT findings of different types of retinal whitening observed in CRVO.Methods:A prospectiveobservational randomized study included a total of 20 eyes of 20 patients withcentral retinal vein occlusion(CRVO), in the period from September 2014 to June 2016.Results:Twenty eyes of twenty patients with central retinal vein occlusionwith age range from 40 to 86. Fifteen patients were males and five were females. Twelve patients were ischemic (60%); in nine of them cotton wool spots were detected. Eight patients were non ischemic (40%); in four of them, paracentral acute middle maculopathy was detected. Conclusion:In our study, we described these retinal white lesions using FFA and SD-OCT. There is no relation between occurrence of PAMM or CWS with age, sex or presence of macular edema. However, there is strong correlation between retinal perfusion and type of retinal white lesions; PAMM being present only in non ischemic CRVO and cotton wool spots only in ischemic CRVO.
