Long Term Results of Corrosive Esophageal Stricture Management

Abstract


In Egypt, the problem of esophageal stricture following potash ingestion is still a major challenge in pediatric surgical practice.

Most of victims of this problem are young children with potential normal life expectancy who survive to suffer disabling sequelae.

This study included 30 patients with caustic esophageal stricture who has been managed by either esophageal dilatation or esophageal replacement by using the left colon during 3 years period at pediatric surgery department, Ain Shams University.

Patients in this study were divided into two groups: Group A: Patients underwent successful dilatation.
Group B: Patients underwent colonic replacement either using the retrostemal or posterior mediastinal routes.

In the 2 groups, we evaluated patients six months to one year postoperative.

- The nutrition state as regard weight and height compared to the normal percentile growth curve, feeding habits and anthropometric measurements.

- Morphological and functional state of the dilated esophagus or the replaced colon by using barium study, endoscopic
