EFFICACY AND SAFETY OF ATORVASTATIN IN SEPTIC PATIENTS
. Hanaa Mohamed Abd Allha Ahmed El Gendy;
Abstract
Sepsis is an infection-induced inflammatory syndrome with a clinical spectrum ranging from mild single-organ malfunction to multiorgan failure, shock, and death. When combined, sepsis and septic shock are among the most common cause of death.The incidence of sepsis and sepsis-related deaths seems to be increasing despite recent advances.
The pathogenesis of sepsis involves a complex process of cellular activation resulting in the release of proinflammatory mediators, such as cytokines; activation of neutrophils, monocytes, and microvascular endothelial cells; and activation of the complement, coagulation, and fibrinolytic systems. Numerous trials have failed to demonstrate that blocking specific inflammatory mediators is beneficial in patients with sepsis.
Recently discussed, statins have a wide variety of properties
