Abstract
T
his study was designed to determine the effect of serum cord blood Leptin levels on fat mass distribution in Macrosomic Newborns.
(The Effect of Cord blood Leptin on fat mass distribution in Macrosomic Newborns born to diabetic mothers and the other half born to obese mothers).
The study was performed on 40 cases of Neonates who weighed ≥4kg in the way that half of them were infant of diabetic mothers and the other half were born to obese mothers with BMI≥25. They were selected from delivery room in Gynecology and Obstetric Hospital , Ain shams university and from El Monira General Hospital.
In the group whom mothers suffered obesity (IOBM) before pregnancy; the Neonates ‘ birth weight was ranging from 4.00-4.500 kg. Mean BMI 16.49±2.20 and Mean ponderal index was 31.97±2.12 .It was proved by results that Pnderal index was more Precise in describing adiposity for infants less than 1 year of age in the two groups.
In the group of diabetic Mothers (IDM); the Neonates’ birth weight was ranging from 4.00-5.00 kg. Mean BMI was 17.98±1.53 and Mean ponderal index was 33.30±1.35 and they had the larger birth weight in general.
The BMI of obese mothers in group (IOBM) ranged from 25.20 -35.40 and the mean gestational weight gain was 18.15±4.88 . The GWG during pregnancy was positively and significantly correlated to increase birth weight (Pvalue-0.044).
From the results of the study also that there was not a significant difference while comparing between measurements of skin fold thickness in the newborns as an expression to their body fat mass distribution but readings were find a bit higher in Group (IDM) than in Group (IOBM) explained as follows:
Group (IOBM): skin fold thickness readings were, at biceps mean 4.65±1.35, triceps 5.15±1.31, subscapular 4.98±1.92 and in thigh 6.55±1.39.
Group (IDM): skin fold thickness readings were, at biceps mean 4.60±1.23, triceps 5.50±2.37, subscapular 5.65±2.58 and in thigh 6.90±2.97.
