Evaluation of the Effect of Surgical Treatment on Facial Scar
Osamu Abdel Karim Mohamed;
Abstract
Control of scarring is certainly one of the most difficult challenges of surgical practice. Facial scars cause functional and aesthetic problems. Currently, there are several surgical accepted approaches for the treatment of facial scars; each approach presents various advantages and drawbacks in terms of effectiveness, time, cost, and discomfort. (Raphael et al., 1994).
In this study, re-evaluation of commonly used surgical approaches of facial scars.
25 patients with facial scars of different causes (traumatic,
14 bum, post-infection, ulcer, etc.) were divided into three groups:
(1) The first group:
The surgical line of treatment in this group was surgical excision of the scar (proper planning, drawing, incision, suture technique, dressings, and post-operative care.) in ten patients. Pretreatment score ranged from 10 to 13 with mean 11.2, which after treatment ranged from 2 to 6 with mean 4.7
(2) The second group:
The surgical line of treatment in this group was Z-plasty surgical technique (proper planning, drawing, incision, mobilization, dressings, and post-operative care.) in ten patients complaining of facial scars.
Pretreatment score ranged from 10 to 13 with mean 11.2,
which after treatment ranged from 2 to 6 with mean 4.2
